today, we knitted the gnome's hat. This is the pattern on what we did today.

What you need to know:
Knit and Purl
I-cord
Increase and decrease
Work in the round.

Gnomes are a delight to knit and bring pleasure and happiness to the knitter and person receiving them. Make them to hang, stand unpuported or as a toy.

MATERIALS

Worsted Weight yarn:
Colour A, 10 grams / 1oz for Hat
Colour B, 10 grams / 1oz for Body and Arms
Colour C, 5 grams / 1/2oz for Beard and Nose
Knitting needles:
Three 3.75 mm 40cm (US 5, 16in) circular knitting needles
or Four 3.75 mm (US 5) double-pointed knitting needles
Two 4 mm (US US 6) double-pointed knitting needle for beard and armd
Tapestry needle
Removable stitch marker
Clean Polyester stuffing
Metal washers or glass stones for weight at bottom of gnome to help stand unsupported

TENSION
A firm fabric so the stuffing does not show between the stitches.

PATTERN NOTES
Use two of the double- pointed knitting needles to work the I-cord at the top of the Hat and the Arms.
Use four double-pointed or three 40cm / 16 inch circular knitting needles to knit in the round.

ABBREVIATIONS
dec - decrease
dpn - double-pointed needle
inc - increase
K - knit
K2tog - knit two sts together (1 st dec)
Kfb - knit into front and back of stitch.
MB - make bobble
ndl - needle
P - purl
sl1P - slip 1 stitch purlwise
psso - pass slip stitch over
rem - remin[ing]
rep - repeat
rnd - round
RS - right side
st[s] - stitch[es]
st-st - stocking stitch
WS - wrong side.

ssK - slip slip knit: slip the next 2 stitches one by one knitwise, insert the tip of the left needle, from left to right, into the fronts of those two stitches and knit them together (1 stitch decrease)
Or you can K2tog through the back loop.

5-Stitch Bobble: Knit into the front,  the back, the front, the back, the front. This turns 1 stitch into 5 stitches.
Working on these 5 stitches: Turn work and P5.
Turn, K5.
Turn, P5.
Next row: Sl1P, K1, K2tog, psso - 3 stitches.
Next row: Sl1P, K2tog, psso - back to 1 stitch.

I-cord: Using two dpns, cast on 3 or 4 stitches. * holding needle in your left hand, slip stitches to righthand end of needle and knit the 4 stitches pulling the yarn snug. Repeat from * until I-cord is desired length. I-cord is worked with the right side facing you at all times. After a few rounds, work will begin to form a tube. Then cut yarn leaving a 4 inch tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and draw through the stitches from right to left.

HAT
Using Hat colour, cast on 3 stitches onto 3.75 mm (US 5) dpn.
Work 4 rounds of I-cord.
Rnd 5: Kfb into every st - 6 sts.
Knit 1 round.
Divide stitches onto three double-pointed needles or three circular needles.
Place a removable stitch marker to mark beginning/end of rounds.
The hat and body are worked in three sections. Repeat instructions three times.
Rnd 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: (Kfb into next stitch, K to end of section) thrice - 3 sts per section, 9 sts.
Rnds 9&10: Knit.
Rnd 11: (Kfb into next st, K to end of section) thrice - 4 sts per section 12 sts.
Rep rnds 9-11 6 more times - 30 sts.
Brim:
K 2 rounds.
Purl 3 rounds.
Break off Hat colour. leave a 3 inch tail.
