Unfortunately, that is the downside of lifelines.

 

The only other thing I can suggest is using a 000 40” circular needle as your lifeline.  As it is finer, it will take up less room in those stitches.

Annette reminded me that a lifeline is a very good idea when working with even simple lace, so I put one in my Kanak shawl, but knitting back on the row with the lifeline was very tight.  Is there a way to put in a lifeline without making knitting the next row difficult?

I used a free cable for my lifeline, so it’s not real thick, but thick enough to tighten things up on the next row.
