Hi,

I don’t like it either, finding an already made knot in a skein.

What I sometimes do is midway between trying to hide the knot in the fabric and cutting it out.

I don’t cut it out right away. I move my hand holding the working yarn a bit down the working yarn. Then, I take the working yarn there I’m holding it and pinch it between my index finger and where the two needles meet. Then, I knit, making sure to keep the working yarn in my pinch. This create a loop jutting out of the fabric, with the knot in the middle.

When ready to weave in the ends, I cut the loop right before and after the knot. And weave in the two ends.

What I don’t like is that it means weaving in ends in the midle of a row, which I try to avoid. So, if cutting the knot out after ending a row don’t mean loosing a lot of yarn I prefer doing that. Also depend what I’m knitting. But sometimes that trick is useful. :)

Yes, roll it into a literal ball. Especially if you want clean yarn to work with. Also I do my joins at the end in crochet. You can always very easily hide your ends when you edge the afghan, for example.  After several washings and use the joins in the middle will fail. I say why risk the embarrassment of a hole showing up when you are out.

I care and want to do a professional job.

I didn’t know hook shape could make a difference, except in how I hold the hook.

What do you mean by rolling your yarn?  Making it into a ball?

Sometimes, when I have a small knot, I grab it with my fingernails and wiggle it a bit.  Sometimes that loosens it up enough to get it out.

What I hate is when the yarn maker has tied 2 pieces together in my skein and I have to decide whether to leave it and make it inconspicuous or cut it and have a break where I haven’t meant to have one.

If you are having trouble making round chains, try a hook with a flat neck. You have less chance pulling the chain tight. I always loosely role my yarn. The yarn should squish some if you are rolling it loose enough. Also as you role check for nots. If you can’t get rid of the knot by pulling each part of the knot till it comes out and makes the yarn continue unbroken. If it is a tiny knot you may want to use the yarn for your edging. If the knot is large, but it off. Use this skein for fringe or making something smaller than an afghan. If you are making toys, you can tuck a large knot inside. Secure it inside the toy.
