Hi Tracy and Everyone, we sure do need a somewhat waterproof hat up here in
this part of Maryland today, it is raining and chilly.

Now I think about it, something that won't work with anything except wool is
felting, because the fibers need to stick together.  

I've made a couple felt hats.  It was fun, and they're pretty waterproof, at
least for a while.

Just make sure you check the weight of the yarn. If it says 3-ply and you
want your shawl to be light and airy, then that is the kind of natural or
acrylic yarn you want.

 

Becky who so far has only used acrylic yarns or cotton mixed

Someone, maybe Naima?, was asking about patterns for acrylic yarns instead
of wool.  I just got a pattern that suggests several possible yarns, some of
them wool and some acrylic, which seems to confirm my opinion that they're
interchangeable and you don't need specific patterns for acrylic.  They feel
different; the care may be different; but I don't think the patterns are
different.

As ever, people are free to disagree and point out my mistake.
