[NFB-Blind-Crafters] Scrappy blanket crochet project

While I am not opposed to using black for some things, there was a project that I was concerned about the end result.  When my daughter was in early elementary school, she asked me to make her a blanket.  We went to the store so she could select a yarn color for me to use.  I anticipated that she would pick a light blue as that was her favorite color at the time.  She did pick light blue, as well as hot pink and black.  It took me weeks to come up with a way of combining these colors.  I designed a crocheted square that was made up of a 5-inch diameter circle inside a 2-inch-wide square boarder.  The circles had a 1-inch hot pink center surrounded by a 2-inch black circle.  The square frame was light blue.  I originally planned to use the black for the centers of pink circles, but no one liked the pink and blue being next to each other.

I am not a fan of blak either.  Although, that being said, one of my favorite Afghans my mother-in-law crocheted was made of granny squares.  The insides of each square being a mish mosh of colors, used up bits and pieces of yarn.  Each granny square was edged with a round of black yarn.

 

The finished piece was beautiful and had the feel of a stained glass window.

It’s a good thought Henry, but I’m not sure.  I have lots of small balls of yarn myself, but I don’t have a large amount in a neutral like black, white or grey.  I could certainly buy some, and it would be a fun project, but I feel ambivalent about buying more yarn to use up yarn, if you get my drift.  Though white and grey are always useful.  Never been a fan of black, except in Labradors.

Last week I saw a crochet pattern using scrap yarn that sounds interesting. I think it’s called the scrappy blanket.

You crochet a blanket, alternating a row of single crochet and a row of double crochet.  Then you take pieces of yarn long enough to go across the blanket and weave them through the double crochet rows.  You can then crochet a border or leave the ends of the yarn pieces as fringe.  It said to not use yarn thinner than DK, and to make either the blanket or the scraps in a neutral color.  And the scraps don’t have to be the same thickness, which should add interesting texture.

Sounds like a fun way to use up lots of small balls of yarn.
