[NFB-Blind-Crafters] Textile Access Project

I was recently contacted by this same woman, but she had quite a different "explanation" and description of her work. I also would recommend being wary of her. I responded to her cautiously and she did not reply to me. She had found me through the Accessible Patterns Index, and had nothing but "praise" for the designers creating accessible patterns, so I find it very strange that here she is saying she does not want to talk to the community of designers that is working so hard to create these patterns. I think she may be a student looking for a deceptive way to get free research, which she could have done many other ways and have been much more straightforward. She also said nothing about the Uglier than Sin stuff, so just weird all around.

Good Morning Everyone, if this is how this woman feels about this, then, you can count me out, I want no part to do with her.

Both of those days are okay for me. Giving her the benefit of the doubt I’ll give her a chance to explain what she meant by that.

But if she is saying that all homemade crafts are ugly then I would not be interested in having her around. I get enough negativity from my own family and I don’t want to add to the anti-crafter’s debate.

I’m developing the Textile Access Pilot, an initiative examining accessibility throughout knitting, crochet, loom knitting, and other textile crafts. The project looks beyond individual adaptive tools to the complete crafting experience: pattern accessibility, tactile and nonvisual instruction, yarn identification and organization, workspace setup, dexterity, cognitive accessibility, equipment, and independent participation

I also run Uglier Than Homemade Sin, an adaptive fiber arts project centered on accessible and beginner-friendly crafting.

I am especially interested in learning from blind crafters rather than assuming that sighted designers, manufacturers, or accessibility professionals can determine what people need on their own. Some of the most innovative solutions I have encountered have been developed within the blind crafting community itself.

I would love to connect with someone from NFB Blind Crafters about the barriers your members encounter, adaptations that have proven particularly useful, and what you wish yarn, tool, pattern, and craft companies understood about accessibility.

If there is interest, I would also be glad to explore ways the Textile Access Pilot could support your work through resource sharing, accessible product evaluation, community feedback, or future collaboration.

Thank you for creating a place where blind crafters can share, learn, and teach.

Best,

Hello,

I recently discovered NFB Blind Crafters/Krafters Korner and have been exploring the tremendous amount of practical knowledge your community has developed around accessible crafting.

I’m developing the Textile Access Pilot, an initiative examining accessibility throughout knitting, crochet, loom knitting, and other textile crafts. I also run Uglier Than Homemade Sin, an adaptive fiber arts project centered on accessible and beginner-friendly crafting.

I hope she has an explanation for her phrase in her signature, “Uglier Than Homemade Sin.” That is just down right weird. As a professional would you put that in your signature. I assume she is sarcastic.

So, whatever, let me know and I might be there.

Best,

Hi Tracy and Cindy and Everyone, save me a seat at the dessert table too please! Big smile.

Getting to crafting, sorry that I missed What Are You Doing This Week on Sunday, the day got away from me. So, What are you doing this Week Tuesday? I am working on a few Loom Knitted scarves, and going to take a hat off of the 36 peg round loom in about a half of an hour from now to be able to start on another hat for the homeless shelter.

I guess a success I’ve had is making desserts with fruit from the farmers’ market. I’ve made peach cobbler, plum crisp, and next up will be apple-cinnamon bread.

Good job, Henry!

I’ve just about finished ripping back the part of the tank top I messed up, and then I’ll reknit it.

I also fixed another tank top that had underarms too deep, by picking up some stitches and knitting a few rows. Came out nice.

I hope she has an explanation for her phrase in her signature, “Uglier Than Homemade Sin.” That is just down right weird. As a professional would you put that in your signature. I assume she is sarcastic.

So, whatever, let me know and I might be there.

Brinda said:

I recently discovered NFB Blind Crafters/Krafters Korner and have been exploring the tremendous amount of practical knowledge your community has developed around accessible crafting.

I’m developing the Textile Access Pilot, an initiative examining accessibility throughout knitting, crochet, loom knitting, and other textile crafts.

Best,

Brinda Dungan

I spoke to Brinda, and suggested a Zoom meeting on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. October 10 or 11 are good for both of us. Do those who wish to attend have a preference?

This project sounds very interesting. I’d like to set up a Zoom meeting to speak with Brinda about accessibility to crafting, if others are interested too. What do you say?

Best,

Brinda Dungan

Good job, Henry!

I’ve just about finished ripping back the part of the tank top I messed up, and then I’ll reknit it.

I also fixed another tank top that had underarms too deep, by picking up some stitches and knitting a few rows. Came out nice.

Tracy
