I used to have my mother start the chain row. She always used a slip stitch. So practice a few times, soft smile.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Lay the yarn down with the little tail closest to you. This little tail is called “the tail,” smile. The yarn coming off your ball of yarn is called the “working yarn.” <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Now lay the hook horizontally across the yarn with the hook end of the hook pointing to the left. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Next Take the tail and bring it over the shaft of the hook moving away from you, cross it over the working yarn, moving to your left towards the hook part of the hook, then wrap that tail around the shaft of the hook so that the tail is once again facing you. This will form a loop on your hook. Your needle is holding this loop.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Now take your working yarn bring it forward towards you and lay it over the needle closest to the hook end, to the left of the first loop on your hook. . You have two loops on your needle.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Finally, the first loop on your needle needs to go over the working yarn loop and then over the hook part of the hook and off of it.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Pull the tail and the working yarn together under the needle to tighten your slip stitch. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>How to remove the slip stitch. Take the loop off your hook. Pull the tail and the working yarn apart, voila, slip stitch disappears.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Practice making loose slip stitches and tighter slip stitches a few times. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Tip: I like the looser slip stitches when I am making an afghan. I just about always get to many chains on my row. Then when I turn to make the first crochet row and measure it, the row is usually longer then I want it to be. So instead of ripping the entire row, I just loosen the slip stitch cut the yarn or simply take out the number of chains to get the right length. This baby blanket called for a hundred and eight chains. But with this yarn and needle size I chose, it took like twenty chains less. So I cut the chain and then gently unwove the chains to get the correct size for this blanket.
