[NFB-Braille-Discussion] Braille Use Discrimination

Many sighted classmates came up to me after the incident and condemned it,
for which I'll always be grateful.

I did well in the class.

To your last point, many of my sighted classmates said I wrote more quickly
than them on my BrailleNote. I hope the instructor respected that.

The smart-alecky response "Would you rather I use a Perkins brailler?" would
not have been helpful., but it does occur to me. How is everyone else
taking notes? Pens and pencils do make some noise, and last time I checked,
people were not using those much. The devices people use now are much
noisier. If you had no other problems with him, perhaps you should give him
the benefit of the doubt that he didn't know what you were doing. If you
did well in the class, perhaps his respect for your note-taking increased.

Hi list,

I wanted to ask about something I'm sure is tough to discuss but I think
needs to be talked about.

Have any of you faced what I call "braille use discrimination?" I have.

Ten years ago in college, I was using my BrailleNote in psychology class.
The instructor, the head of the department, turned to me and said the sound
of the BrailleNote bothered him - in front of the whole class. I felt
ashamed to use my BrailleNote for a while. The instructor's excuse was he
had a bad day.

After a meeting, the instructor was mysteriously super-friendly for the rest
of that year.

I regret I didn't know how to respond, so I didn't say anything. In retro, I
would have stopped the instructor and said, "What did you just say to me?"
