How do you, as the end user, get the text of the book into the computer To begin with? Do you have to do the scanning or do you take it somewhere and pay to have it scanned?

You mention getting a PDF or publishers file of the book. How do you get those? Can you easily get these for any pleasure book you want to read? I presume getting these files frees you from the task of scanning, which would be time consuming.

Also, if an individual does this, is there any way to share this work with, for example, the NLS? That might allow them to have a larger supply of Braille files and others who want to read the book could benefit.

You can run a print book through the free send to braille translator, and get a perfectly readable braille file to embossed or put on a braille display. Or if you want more powerful transcription features, you can open a print document such as a word document or a PDF or a publishers file in braille blaster which is free. you can then save it as a braille ready file, BRF file, and then either put it on a braille display or emboss later on. send to braille, and braille blaster are both free. but if you want more powerful fully featured braille translation and special kinds of transcribing, you will still want to buy duxbury Braille translator for around $700. see the websites who's links I am pasting below for more information and downloads.
