[NFB-Braille-Discussion] Literacy for Adult Learners

That is a good start.
The late Jerry Whittle, who taught braille to adults at LCB for over 30 years, used to say that in order to see significant improvement in your reading speed, you need to read for a good hour every weekday, and more on weekends. The hour can be divided up as you need.
And I've also heard from others that adults should try to read 10,000 pages a year to increase their speed. That's approximately 30 pages a day. That might not be possible until you increase your speed a bit more. But it's not an easy thing to do, at least for me I haven't broken 100 yet either and I read all the time. But I'm older (71)
Good luck

For reading Braille, I tried to read three or four pages in a book for 15 minutes or 6 pages for 30 minutes.

And if Braille reading exhausts you to begin with, read several times a day in shorter intervals. Over time you will build up your stamina and will be able to read more comfortably for longer periods of time. You might want to practice both with your Braille display and hard copy Braille. The experience is somewhat different with each.

The goal of being able to read aloud at a respectable speed is definitely in your reach. The key is to put in lots of time reading. If you just read Braille once in a while, your speed won't improve. If it motivates you, keep a log of the pages you read every day.

Good luck.

Cordially,

Ellen

All,

Thank you for the encouragement. I've read every book, article, blog, and research article I've ever found on the subject. The long and short of it is that very, very, *very* few adult learners have ever been recorded reading more than 60-80WPM, and even the outliers are usually at 120 or so. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, that could be bad research, bad teaching, limited motivation, or maybe those people were just too busy reading to be busy participating in a study about reading. Surely I can think of above average skill levels that research isn't good at capturing for any number of reasons.
Regardless, 120 would probably serve my purposes, anyway. My ultimate goals are to read fluently aloud and to read so quickly I'm not exhausted after just a few pages.

I'll learn to emphasize the braille display and use speech when something is truly time-sensitive. Let's see where it takes me.
