[NFB-Braille-Discussion] braille ereader as a TTY device

Ken,

Part of the problem is that most of us here are not familiar with TTY in terms of how it is implemented on the iPhone. I would suggest two things.

First make sure to find out what your friend would prefer for communications. It is possible that she might prefer emails or even text messages if conversations are not too long.

Second, If she would prefer to use TTY, you might get some good advice on the NFB-DB list. There are probably people there who have used the iPhone with TTY who could provide some help. I am guessing that using the NLS reader should be the same as with any braille display that can be connected to an iPhone.

The link to go directly to the NFB-DB mailing list page is:

NFB-DB Info Page (nfbnet.org)<http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nfb-db_nfbnet.org>

I hope you can get your questions answered.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Maybe a bit more clear. In 2016 or so I had found an old schoolmate from the oakhill school for the blind who is deaf. Though I didn't know her well, she left a big impression on me. Finding her again and actually talking to her again via the NJ relay have found she's the beautiful person I remember. I'm interested in finding yout if I can call her without assistance from the relay. Also am interested in finding this out because I want to really get to know what the braille braille Ereader from humanware can and can't do. I was a pilot tester here in new jersey. And the reader works spectacularly with my iPhone. I really have worked on learning both devices. So since the software based TTY function didn't work should I enable the hardware based TTY function. I do know that if hardware TTY is enabled you no longer can hear from the phone speaker unless the iPhone has a function similar to the old flipphone I used that had a TTY plus hear and a TTY full. But that required aTTY gadget to be pluged into the headphone jack so in other words. Will the braille reader actually work as a TTY device with hardware based TTY function will it recognize a Bluetooth paired device like the reader or do I need a special adapter, or a physically connected keyboard. I do have some understanding of the onscreen keyboard and braille screen input, but still haven't mastered the roter

Is the TTY device for you or for someone else who is deaf?

I think what's more important is what device the deaf person is using. If you or they are using voice over on an iphone, then it should type out whatever is typed in the message, whether it is typed in braille or using the qwerty keyboard I type notes to myself all the time on my iPhone using the onscreen braille keyboard and voice over reads it back to me. And whatever boice over reads back I assume that is what is on the screen.Does that make any sense?

Have a good day.

Deb

Subject: [NFB-Braille-Discussion] reader as a TTY device

Hi NFB braille users ken here with a question. Tried this by enabling the software TTY function on my Iphone and it didn?t work. Does anyone know if the NLS braille Ereader can be used as a TTY device on an iPhone if the hardware based TTY function is enabled. Also if so, if I use the contracted/UEB braille will it translate? My phone is set for six dot UEB and when I have used the reader on a computer with it?s USB functions for practice to find out what the reader can and can?t do replying to a comment or commenting on facebook it did translate even though I brailled in contracted UEB. Anyone know if it?s possible to use the reader as a TTY with the iPhone?
