[NFB-Braille-Discussion] Many Faces of BARD

I’d like to reply to this post.

I’ve been reading Braille books for awhile on my iPhone. I’ve also been reading Braille magazines as well. I’ve found an anomaly in the Braille magazines that I think your list members should be aware of. That anomaly is that the article titles in the table of contents (at least in Reader’s Digest which I read) is not necessarily the same as the text in the actual article.

So why is that important?

When I read magazines, I look through the table of contents for an article I’d like to read. I note the title, and how it’s spelled and capitalized.
I then enter that text in the search field of the BARD app (observing capitalization, punctuation, and contractions) and perform a search. The goal is for BARD to take me directly to the article, thus saving me time in finding the actual article I want to read. In other words, use the computer on the phone to my advantage and efficiently navigate the magazine. If I didn’t do this, I’d have to search manually through the pages of the magazine which would take way too much time.

Recently I found this anomaly I’m speaking of. In one Reader’s digest issue, the title in the table of contents DOES NOT match with the title in the actual article. Therefore, when I searched for the article title in the table of contents, the search failed. I found this anomaly in 3 different articles within this issue.

Because of this, I contacted NLS about this (they publish the braille magazine files) and they verified the problem in this issue of Reader’s Digest. They told me that their philosophy to this point was to accurately transcribe the magazine verbatim. I have to agree with that philosophy. They also examined the RD issue and verified the problem. They agreed that given the data in the magazine issue, some searches would fail. I then replied that while accurate transcription was important, it was also important that a reader should be able to search for an article and find it. I suggested that as part of their transcription process, they might consider putting a method in place that would scan the magazine files and identify when magazine article titles don’t match with the article in the body of the magazine. I also suggested that for those mismatched titles, NLS should change the article titles so that they do match, so that a search could then be performed successfully by the reader. This would ensure quick navigation by the reader. I am sure that this suggestion will generate a lot of debate, because what I’m suggesting will mean someone (the publisher or NLS) will have to change their processes, that is if the search problem is to be fixed. I haven’t yet received a reply regarding my suggestion.

Since I saw this post about reading NLS books, I wanted to write regarding reading magazines. You’ll use the same process to download a magazine as you will a book, and you can definitely read the magazine on the braille display. Just be aware that searching, where magazines is concerned, may have problems.

Just thought you’d want to know. Comments welcome.
