[NFB-Braille-Discussion] Reading Speed Increases

I lived in a farming community about 40 miles outside of Wichita, KS and began my education in the early 60s. I attended my local public school and they did the best they knew how to do. I have extremely limited vision and should have learned braille beginning in first grade but that didn't happen. The school district contacted a TVI and they attempted to introduce braille when I was in the 5th grade but I wanted nothing to do with it so it was dropped and reintroduced when I was in 7th grade. By then, I was so excited to learn it that I progressed on teaching myself between lessons with my TVI. I learned all of the code by the end of 7th grade and had my first braille textbook in 8th grade. I loved it. I could read chapters at my own speed and read them over as many times as I wanted. I learned to read but my writing lagged far behind my reading. I also did not learn Nemeth code and no one thought it was important for me to learn. That is very sad because I am strong in math and could have progressed much faster with Nemeth code. I just didn't think to ask about it. I think attending a public school was the right choice since I lived over 200 miles from the Kansas School for the Blind but it certainly came with limitations too.

Congratulations! What a great story!

Yes, when I was in seventh grade they put me in remedial reading classes because I had such a slow reading speed. Do you think it would’ve occurred to them it was because I couldn’t see!
