Did you have an IEP? I wish people could file lawsuits against school districts for failure to provide an appropriate education. Our parents are supposed to be our advocates but too many parents believe the school district has their child's best interest at heart. This may be true in many school districts but many districts want to provide the minimum amount of services they can get away with.

Chiming in to say that when I was fourteen, I had a two-degree field with sub-acuity vision and severe sensitivity to glare. They put me in special ed math classes and gave me five inch tall equations written in thick black marker on mint green construction paper. I had to put my face to the paper and trace each leg of every letter and number, then still lose track of what I was reading. It was horrible. And then I learned braille.
Suddenly I could do the work faster and better than my sighted peers.
My comprehension was never the problem. The problem was access. ended up back in general ed, accelerating my math and science programs, graduating early, and getting a degree in bio-cultural anthropology.
When I went totally blind partway through, it was irrelevant. Then I continued on and earned a master's in O&M and a doctorate in law.
No one is more of a braille advocate than I am. I just wish I'd learned sooner and didn't have to develop speed as an adult.
