hi kathy I love your atitude the comment about anyone with a brain is oh
so true. I'm hoping this presentation will go well and I'm wondering how
much time you had to prepare just curious.

> Sheila: I just wanted to comment on the advice you received from Marsha and from Scott. I gave the deaf-blind message to my state convention this spring, and the topics Marsha and Scott suggested are exactly the topics I talked about. Anyone in your audience with a brain will recognize that the issues we face as deaf-blind persons today are the same issues faced by the blind in 1940 when the NFB was founded. My State president did not give me much notice bebetween asking me to present and the date of the presentation, and I wish I'd had Scott and Marsha's suggested list when I started my preparation. I had to turn myself inside out to narrow the focus. Good luck, and God bless you for taking the bull by the horns. Cathy MillerSent from my iPad

>> If I were in your shoes, I would probably talk to the convention about issues deafblind persons face. First outline that deafblind is a broad term, meaning that anyone who has a hearing loss, or who has a visual impairment together can be considered deafblind. That blind persons can have varying degrees of vision and hearing loss. they also can have varying communication modes. for example, some are verbal, some use sign, some use tactual sign, others read braille only, or have all spoke words written down to read. If you can imagine of all the different combinations, you have talked about the deafblind community. Talk about your experiences in not being able to hear in noisey places, how you can't hear this or that. How maybe you don't feel comfortable traveling in new areas because you can't rely on your hearing. You could also say something about how deafblind people have a harder time finding a job and keeping that job. You could also mention, how you are taking steps to become more independent by going to HKNC soon. Explain that HKNC is like a NFB training center but they cater to the deafblind. Instead of HKNC just teaching blindness skills they teach both skills how to live as a deafblind person and as a blind person. I would also talk about the tolerance that the blind community must have for those persons who are deafblind. That none of us just got up one day and said, I am going to be deafblind today. That if a deafblind person asks for information, don't get all upset when that person can't hear your response. Yes and the last thing I would talk about is the Icanconnect program.

I have two thoughts that I'd like to discuss with you off list because I don't want to use these peoples names on list because I'm not ask them if they can help you or not? Please give me a call at the number below in my signature or send me a email off list and will try and get it worked out because I think I might be able to help you because I have access to two deaf blindness related resources that aren't in Montana but I think might be willing to help but I like I said not talk to them yet and I need to talk to you before I talk to them? Also I may be able to help you myself because I may have a sit down with our states national rep who just so happens to be president Mauer please let me know I am around working from home all day today.
