The old rule about not implanting unless the person was profoundly deaf is no longer cut and dry.  This is probably due to several factors, not the least of which is the low risk compared to before.  Yes, the evaluation does include a visit with an audiologist who, after testing, will tell you if you are profoundly or just severely deaf.  But that's only a part of the eval, and used alone does not indicate whether a person is a candidate.  A wholistic approach is taken, in which the surgeon learns about your lifestyle and about how much information you get about your environment from visual cues.  The whole process seems quite subjective, and that is why everyone should be evaluated.  If all you wish to do in life is sit on your potato couch, there's no sense in getting implanted.  None of us are like that.  Make that phone call today.  Your current audi can tell you where the closest CI center is; and the center will require a recommendation from your ENT.  The whole process takes months.  Don't delay.  You can always change your mind; and the actual best thing that can happen is that you fail the evaluation  Smile.  Cathy
