Heather, good luck at your endeavors. And if any of us on the national DB
can be of asisstence just let us know. Nothing worth achieving is ever
easy.

Best Regards,

I will think about it! I will mention this to my friends as well! It
should be so simple but, I have experienced several let downs over the past
ten years to know that this is not always the case; at least here in Texas!

" As I'm here considering an effort to form a DB division in CO, I've
come up with some aditional things to think about. First, some drama, no
matter how much you wish to avoid it will happen at some point. It's just how
things are unfortunately. Secona and more important, is that it's not just
how many people you have who are interested that matters. You need a few
strong and reliable leaders. For example, at the very least, you will need 4,
preferably at least 5, people who are reliable and can stay on task. These
people are the president,VP, treasurer, secretery, and at least 1 board
member. My issue is finding those particular 5 people who saem trustworthy and
who also have an active interest in NFB. Not that I would want to
discourage anyone from setting up a state DB devision, but it's totall

Heather, Marsha and Janice are right. You don't need a chapter. But you
do need people who are DB or will work to help the DB. In the Fl. nfb db
constitution only the president and vice of the division have to be deaf
blind. I believe we do have to pay dues to the state affiliate if we are not
in a chapter. The DB division gets to write their own bi-laws. We have
some members on our division who are not disabled. Just get interested
people together and your deaf blind friends.

Hi Heather,
I agree with Marsha. If you speak to the State Affiliate President and
inform him/her that you are interested in forming a DB committee with the
hope of becoming a DB division and would like their support or someone you
could communicate with from their office.

Once your group has stepped up to the plate and made it known-possibly at
this upcoming convention; then other interested DB people may contact you.

Heather,
The point of contact person, would be the person who would head up the
effort to form the db group within your state. This DB group does not have
anything to do with any chapter, but is dealt with by the state affiliate
people, like the president and the board. Granted if there is drama on the
state level, that is a whole another conversation. You should talk directly
with your stat president, not the chapter one. If you want a DB group, get all
the DB people together, aside from the chapter, talk about what needs to
be done, and do it. Of course depending on your state constitution, depends
on if you need to pay dues to a chapter or can pay those same dues through
a state affiliate division, of course something that can be worked out
later or figured out later. Its fairly easy, it just needs someone who is
willing to be the leader. Like I said forget about the chapter, forget about
the drama, worry about the DB people. Talk with your state president,
although at this point you might want to wait, as I know your state convention is
coming up. And the president and or state board positions might change. If
there are 10 Deafblind people, in the austin area who are interested in a
deafblind nfb state affiliate division, you have the people, you just need
the lead person, and people who would like to get involved. Don't wait for
the state president or board to approach you, you approach them, someone
approach them. People do not know the issues until we, deafblind people,
bring it to their eyes, no pun intended. If there are 10 deafblind persons in
the austin area, imagine how many other deafblind persons are around the
state who need someone to speak for them, who could use the information, who
could use an empathy ear, again no pun intended. This is not an Austin
thing, this is a Texas issue. Like I said forget the drama, do not even go
through the chapter, go right to the state president.
Just my two cents,

Yes I am kind of a member of the Austin chapter! But it has problems and
I did not want to be caught up with them! Our deaf blind devision here is
lacking to say the lease! I asked a couple of friends if they would be a
contact. But like me they don't want to be part of the drama here! I think
at least ten of us are here at least who are are db or want to work in that
field in Austin! If we could form our own chapter, maybe! But, than that
would require us to be involved in some other sorted drama; by the current
NFB chapter! Heather

Heather, I don't know the answer to your question, but do you live in
Texas? I'm wondering if we have a DB contact in Texas. re you a member of the
NFB? Do you have a home chapter? Who is your Texas Affiliate President?
 Cathy
