Subject: [NFB-DB] Participation and Re: Membership Dues

Scott,
I concur with your statement about the limitation of membership involvement to the few who attend Convention once a year. One of the most salient features of deafblindness is the isolation it imposes on us. The Division must deal with that issue, and membership should be involved in the operations of the Division throughout the year. Otherwise, the Division cannot represent the entirety of deafblind people in the US.

Technology has evolved to the point that non-traditional methods of communication among deafblind people is possible, and the ICC program has made it practical. We must begin to employ every tool we have to help deafblind people to be a part of the movement.

We need to expand operation Outreach and start groups and committees in every State Affiliate.I have co-founded a DB Division in Louisiana, and I have been working with the DB Committee in the Maine Affiliate, which has grown and will probably receive their charter at the Affiliate Convention this fall. Sate Affiliates must have direction and leadership from the executive board in order to move forward. The most urgent job for those who are elected or re-elected will be to form community among blind and visually impaired people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

As for contacting Joe, I will inform him of your situation. His communication choices are limited as well. . I'll email you off list about this, and we'll work together to get you and Joe in touch.

Thanks for your excellent observations.

Cathy

If the only meetings and/or way to vote is by attending convention, this limits the scope of the division to that group who attend convention. There are many people who cannot for many reasonss, a lot of the financial, so they are kind of being left behind. I hope that whoever is elected/re-elected will take this under consideration.
> Also, you had contacted me before about having a phone conversation with Joe M. My hearing has digressed to the point where I'm not easealy able to take phone calls anymore, and I've been more reliant on text relay or less conventional methods of communication through voice like Face Time and Skype which off a clearer calling experience. I'm not sure how such a phone meeting could be facilitated, but I'm open to suggesttions.

The officers of the Division may have established credit card or other payment method, so I will defer to Janice, the 2nd Vice President. Up until now, only those present at the convention have been able to vote; but again, I'll defer to Janice. Good questions, Scott! Wish you were coming. Cathy
