[NFB-DB] Using Zoom

Good evening everyone on the list, I have some suggestions for this situation and some thoughts. I do use zoom, on both the Mac, and the Windows platform. I actually have had no major issues. On the Mac side the only big issue that I have is the chat window in people coming and going. The only way I know of to stop this chatter is to temporarily silence the screen reader that does help but it also opens the door to other issues. Such as the machine going to sleep because it thinks it’s not being used. In addition you miss messages that may come up on the screen that may be important. The Windows side, things are significantly better although there are some other things to be aware of one quite often jars may get muted by the meeting this for the most part is good but if you need to look up something on your computer or do anything other than beyond this zoom call having things from the outside come in that need your attention but during the webinar may also cause some problems but at least there isn’t as much of the activity window that occurs. The next thing I do is as I stated before make certain that I have the device and listing to at an appropriate volume level.

A suggestion of what to do with the current situation that you’re experiencing with your chapter president and refusing to pay for captioning. I would talk to a state board member, and/or the state president about how this cost can be covered? Another suggestion is you might look into if you got enough advance notice find somebody that can voluntarily caption it for you. I’m sure chapter meetings don’t go more than an hour or two. And finally I think educating your chapter president is always a good bet. Hopefully this will all sink in with your chapter president. If after all the things that I’ve suggested not working then please feel free to send me an email off list and perhaps I can help you with the education. Hang in there it’s hopefully not going to be like this at every chapter meeting.

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

However, my Jacksonville Chapter President refused to pay for Captions for their Zoom meetings. She stated "It (the cost) is too much for the Chapter to consider". It made me and another Chapter member who is Deafblind feel as if we are an "expense".

How have you manage to utilize the zoom and the following: close caption, chat box and adjust the volume. For me Sometimes it is hard to hear everyone clearly on the call. And a bit challenging to use the chat feature with voice over while people are talking . I do not use captioning or interpreters. However, I was wondering if I could use the close caption with voice over and listen that way. Also, what is Cart? So, Which is better a computer, iPad or iPhone. Thanks in advance for your response.
