[NFB-DB] Today’s convention meeting

Hi Doula and All,
I’m wondering if the fight for insurance coverage is something that we, as a division, could get involved in? My insurance doesn’t cover my hearing aids at all, and everything must be paid out of pocket. Luckily I have a health savings account that I was able to use in my recent purchase. My last three pair, were purchased by VR, but the last time they updated the hearing aids for me, the counsellor said that they probably wouldn’t be able to help again. The average life of a hearing aid—at least for someone who depends on them heavily—I am told is about 5 years, and I have been employed for 30_. But to me, it is ludicrous that the insurers will pay for eye glasses, but they won’t pay for hearing aids.
What’s even more peculiar is that they will pay for the hearing tests and exams. They’ll pay for the diagnosis, but not for treatment.
It makes no sense to me? Is there anything we could do to spherehead legislation regarding this?

I don’t know anything about OTC hearing aids. But I would think they would just be very generalized and not personally programmed. I know for me, my audiologist knows specifically for my hearing what programs and volume levels need to be set. I have expensive and specialized hearing aids. And I wish insurances were better at covering this equipment. When I bought my current pair, I tried to find programs that would give me financial support for purchasing my hearing aids, and programs that would normally be available and willing to help were temporarily closed because of the Pandemic. Hope everyone is recovering from Convention.
Warmly,
Doula Secretary NFB Deafblind division, and President Colorado Deafblind division

Yes sorry to miss the event as I was attending another event at that time. I was thinking about this book, I hope to get it soon. I was wondering how the new over the counter hearing aids will help us? I do not think they will be accessible hearing aids, do not think they even thought about that one. Look forward to lessoning to the recording. Heather

Hello Marsha and all,
Do please let us know when the recordings and transcripts become available. I wanted so much to attend, and did actually drop in for about five minutes, but the busy convention schedule and having to do my job meant that I missed a ton of events I wanted to attend.
As you may know, I have written a book on combined vision and hearing loss, the only book of its kind, which was published by National Braille Press in 2020.
In case you are not aware of it, the book is called WHEN YOUR EARS CAN’T HELP YOU SEE, and is available in hardcopy braille, large print, and several downloadable formats. This list is in its resource sections.
The book is the result of my lifelong personal experience with a dual sensory loss, but more importantly, it is the result of research and experience blended to provide techniques and technology designed to help my brothers and sisters everywhere with vision and hearing loss live the lives they want!
I am especially disappointed to have missed the speaker from Helen Keller. I seem to run into a brick wall every time I try to get information for people like me from HKNC.
Looking forward to learning.
Deborah

Hi Marsha!
Thank you so much for this. I had hoped to be able to attend, but there were so many meetings going on at once that I wanted to attend. It was so hard to pick and choose. I intended to divide my time, but I got caught up in another meeting and couldn’t pull myself away.
I will really appreciate having this recording.

Hi List,
If you were unable to attend the annual national Federation of the blind deaf blind division workshop and business meeting today July 8, 2021 we missed you very much.
To recap quickly and to provide information about our newly elected board members. We had a presentation from a staff member of Helen Keller national center who provided us information about her job, her personal life, and how she lives her life to the fullest. We also had a question and answer time from doug Roland, the producer of feeling through, the short film about a New York DeafBlind individual. if you weren’t able to hear the information provided, we’re hoping to have those transcripts and audio information as soon as possible in the future.
Congratulations to all of those who are newly elected, the following is our new national Federation of the blind deaf blind division board:
Alice Eddie, president
Marsha Drenth, 1st vice president
Danielle burton, second vice president
Doula Jarboe, secretary
All of the rest of the board remains the same.
If you have any questions about today’s meeting or about today’s elections, please let us know by email.
Thank you!
Marsha drenth
