Hi Maurice, Stuart here.

Thank you for addressing respect. I support fully fostering such a
respectful environment.

I think it's very important that relationships be considered in terms
of abusiveness and toxicity where respect is concerned. If someone
says they are there to help you, advocate for you and take care by
looking out for your interests conveyed by honest discourse; but, that
person says all decisions about what will be done shall be by others,
that you never get even a vote to influence any decision, and that you
must always respect those specifically in the lead above you: it
smacks of toxicity and abusive mentality.

Anytime respect is mentioned, it needs to be mutually afforded and no
party at any level should receive special mention or treatment in
order for respect for anyone to be respectful rather than being
instead deference. Leadership is often a thankless task, but it is
also an empowering one for good or ill. If leadership engages in
discriminatory practices, we have a civic duty to address it. So long
as it remains that there are second class citizens beholden entirely
to the whims of the first class citizens who exert the organizational
control alone and choose whether or not they deign to heed feedback,
that will at best taint and at worst despoil goodwill and any services
provided.

For instance, while Goodwill (the organization) may have done good
over time in service of community and society, the support they have
shown their leadership deferentially and financially has given way to
a perception of corruption that taints everything they do now. It is a
disservice to all when any party is afforded more than any other in
terms of respect. Similarly, we can respect the good works of the
past, we can respect our foundations and origins, we can respect
present concerns and developments, and we can respect the future
legacy the next generation will inherit from the decisions made,
postponed or ignored today.

So long as some DeafBlind are valued more than others by virtue of
their perceived (or actionable) capacity (or capability), any
postponement or delay of addressing it will exacerbate the undertow on
every action taken in lieu of addressing that.

While we can have rules on NFB-DB for behavior on this list to
maintain decorum and enhance productive communication, any guidance
such rules may lend here will ever fail to reach beyond this list to
those in positions to use or abuse their power. This means to me it
would underscore a double standard where those who control even the
very existence of this list with actions exempt from any recourse to
any rules we make can show immense disrespect and disregard for
whatever they please, while list members can be bound by any
expectation set in the rules as a control. Therefore, when developing
or asserting rules, please consider this dichotomy on the matter of
respect.

Thank you for your consideration.

EOM

That may also remind everyone this is a List run by the national Federation of the blind. That means that we must make sure at all times that we are respectful of the national Federation of the line it’s leaders be there at the state local and or National level etc.. Hopefully the new List moderator can chime in on this to remind people every month or so I hope this helps and I hope everyone enjoys their Saturday. I’m trying to stay cool it is very warm where I live. Please also be aware that I am dictating this to my phone. So there may be occasional word, phrase in our syntax error. If there are errors, of course, they’re not intended and not intentional. Be well everyone
