I’m going to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Tampa Florida. I went blind at 6 months old in the hands of my birth mother.
When I was between the age of 11 and13 I started to lose my hearing. My stepmom would notice because I would sit close to the TV with the volume turned up. Where my mom and my sisters would turn down the TV and I will turn the TV back up. Back in them days when I did a hearing test it said that I was faking my hearing loss but my stepmom news better. She did not believe the results.
My mom noticed when she would close either the bedroom door or the bathroom door that I wouldn’t respond when she would talk to me. And she realized that I was not hearing her through the door with her talking loud. So my step mom knew because she was born with rheumatic fever. And she was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other ear so she knew what to look for.
I continue to slowly lose my vision and my hearing at different rates. Where it now today in my early 50s I only have light perception in my right eye and see nothing in my left eye. And in both ears my hearing loss is 165%. My only ologies said that’s considered DEF. And he tested me with hearing aids. And he said with hearing aids my hearing loss is 115%. So I’m barely catching words with my hearing aids. But I told him that’s OK. Because now I have a blue focus braille display that I can link up to my iPhone with my right hand, right fingers, right arm. Is not in severe pain.
I’ve been a long white cane user since I was 18 years old. That’s when my vision started getting worse right at a high school. And I’ve been a guide dog users. Make sure will make 26 years. My first three were black labs. My first one was a black lab female. My next two was black lab males. But since it’s so hot in Tampa Florida, I chose this time a yellow guy dog. But my sister described that his coat is a reddish brown or a bronze color. And his nose is a reddish pink, and now he has gray all around his face. He has white on his end of his tail, and his toes, and he has white on his chest, going on down his chest stomach and in between his legs. My sister said that’s not gray. It’s just a cream color. And he’s between 70 and 75 pounds. My other three GUIDE DOGS or anywhere from 85 pounds to 120 pounds. So he is the smallest.
I have other health issues, but I won’t go into that. And I hope this was enough to let you know about myself. I am proud to be part of the Deaf Blind Division.
I have to prove all the time when I go out my house being that I’m deaf blind I can still do anything to fully cited and a person who is fully Hearing can do.
Sending all my love to everyone here always
