A quote from Bryen’s article that cannot be emphasized enough, “Basic things like grocery shopping and travel and even reading snail mail becomes a monumental challenge for many,” is one of several reasons why SSPs are so important for the DeafB/blind community. </span><br><span></span><br><span>I have been a strong advocate for recognition of SSPs by our legislators, at all levels, since 2008. It was not until tonight that has really hit me the hardest.</span><br><span>I was out with friends, as we were heading back to Gallaudet, I closed my eyes to challenge myself to allow the cane feed the environment information. It was a very scary experience. </span><br><span></span><br><span>So many things could go wrong! When my eyes were closed, I was walking all over the sidewalk, I could not walk straight! I told myself, “Wow, something has to be done about this because I felt like a drunkard!” My spatial sense was lost.</span><br><span>But was it because it was my first time attempting this? When my spatial sense was challenged tonight, I was concerned that I might wound up accidentally walk into the traffic and being hit by a coming vehicle… I do not know if this was just a first time experience or because I was Deaf and my eyesight was momentarily gone as I closed my eyes. </span><br><span> </span><br><span>However, I wondered if I frequent the same area on a regular basis, might be a different story. But if I go to an unfamiliar surrounding, my spatial sense might be off. </span><br><span> </span><br><span>So, with SSPs, they will be there to provide me support with my spatial sense so I would not be walking all over the sidewalks, potentially sidetracking onto the roads, especially in new areas! And not to mention crossing the streets and not being able to see and hear anything!
