I have heard from many who were there in-person, however, that both the Governmental Affairs meeting and the Great Gathering In were incredibly difficult environments for DeafBlind members. While I cannot speak to either of these meetings, I attended about the first 20-30 minutes of the congressional reception on Tuesday evening before another member from my affiliate and I left. Neither of us found that meeting very accessible. The totality of what I surmised from that meeting was that the NFB was celebrating the 20<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the opening of the Jurnigan Institute and the fact that there were several members of congress who had been invited to attend and/or speak at the event. In these meetings assisted listening devices such as FR receivers would have been very useful. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>One other suggestion: since we in the DeafBlind division are currently coordinating an SSP program for National Convention this summer, I think it would be beneficial to train those interested in pro-tactile communication, including haptics and touch signals. One of my greatest challenges whenever I attend a federation event is competing with all of the noise around me, specifically as it relates to navigation. At this point, I am incapable of echo location, following voices, and using auditory clues to navigate. In other words, traveling independently now requires that I use entirely tactile landmarks and navigation techniques. I know I am not the only one and I would like to see NFB members trained in more affective ways to communicate and provide directions, and I would be happy to provide the training myself. I offer this suggestion in full recognition that for most blind people it is natural to follow voices and use auditory clues, and in fact are trained to do so by NFB affiliated and other training programs. That is great when it works, but sometimes it simply does not.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Let me also suggest that we in the NFB need to become more comfortable using the term DeafBlind. I know many people in my own affiliate who are functionally DeafBlind who would not identify as such, and through our DeafBlind Group, I am working to help reduce the stigma around DeafBlindness. I like to say that at this point in my life with a moderate hearing loss in one ear ang nearing profoundly deaf in the other, my hearing has become nothing more than a tool. Sometimes it is useful and sometimes it is not, as is the case for many of our blind members who have some residual vision.
