[Nfb-editors] Fw: please announce:

This is a press release I send to local radio stations and newspapers, plus
attached to it our chapter newsletter. We do the newsletter by email and in
largeprint, but no longer on tape since my dubbing-deck ghetto blaster has
died. Several newspapers regularly carry our announcement, one sent a
reporter to a chapter meeting and did a story, and carried a story about the
25th anniversary of our chapter. We have gained several members as a result
of this coverage.

Ed Meskys, president, Lakes Region Chapter.

Subject: please announce:

Please announce the next meeting of the Lakes Region Chapter of the National
Federation of the Blind of N.H.

We are unpaid blind volunteers sharing our knowledge of living with little
or no sight with people new to limited vision, share knowledge of new
technology to help the blind, work together to fight discrimination against
blind persons, and advocate for changes in the law, locally and nationally,
to benefit visually impaired persons.

Our next meeting will be Saturday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 A.M. in the Maple Room,
Woodside Building, Taylor Home, across from Irwin Motors, Union Ave.,
Laconia.

At this meeting we will hear from a multi-disabled member and helper about
their experiences at the just completed Special Olympics. We will also
discuss the educational opportunities for blind persons at the NH
Association _for_ the Blind, and our statewide activities. We will also
discuss our holiday plans, including attending a Holiday Pops concert in
Meredith Sunday afternoon, Dec 14, followed by a group dinner in a nearby
restaurant. Note that instead of doing a Yankee gift swap we will buy food
to donate to the Meredith and Belmont food pantries. We must all work to
help in this time of need.

Please note the calendar of events at the end of our newsletter, below.

Thank you, Ed Meskys

LAKES REGION NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND NEWSLETTER for November, 2008

We invite all persons interested in matters concerning blindness and low
vision to our meetings. We normally meet at 10:30 AM on the 3rd Saturday of
the month.
In November we will meet on Saturday the 15th at 10:30 AM at the Taylor Home
meeting room in Laconia. This is on Union Ave., a few blocks north of Main
St. (Rt 106) and Gilford Ave (Rt 11-A), across from Irving Motors. After
turning into the Taylor Home go past the first building and up Ledges Rd.
for about ¾ miles to the Woodside Building (location of the restaurant). We
meet in the Maple Room, just off of the lobby.

In October we discussed the just-past Tech Expo and State Conference in
Concord, and some issues brought up in a message from our National
president, Marc Maurer. This included a history of TV programs and movies
which made fun of or insulted blind people, including the recently released
movie BLINDNESS, voting using the blind-friendly voting machine, and talking
prescription bottles. We ended with our usual pot-luck luncheon.

This month we will discuss the free educational opportunities at NHAB, and
review state NFB plans.

As usual Please arrive by 10:30, so we can set up and get started by 11:00.
This will also give us an extra half hour to socialize before start of
business. We will end our meeting with our usual pot-luck luncheon. First
time attendees and guests need not bring anything. If your contribution is
warm please bring your own crockpot, toaster, or other appliance as no
kitchen is available.

Members of the Lakes Region NFB have formed a bowling league which meets the
second Tuesday morning of the month at 10:30 AM at Funspot. For more info
call Virginia Dearborn, 366-4933.

And plan on our holiday celebration, holiday pops concert Sunday Dec 14 in
Meredith Interlakes HS followed by pot-luck luncheon in a private room of a
near-by restaurant. Like last year, instead of a Yankee gift swap we will
bring up to $10 in non-perishable food to donate to the Meredith and Belmont
Food Pantries.

Do you know another blind or low vision person? Invite them to join us. We
are the blind working to help the blind by sharing information, techniques,
resources, and socialization. Help bring others to share with us. With their
permission give us their regular or e-mail addresses so we can send
announcements. We produce this newsletter in large print and by email. The
cassette version is temporarily suspended as my high speed tape duplicator
is out of order. Please request your preferred format.

If you need help with transportation please call Ed Meskys several days
before the meeting and we will see what we can do to help.
