Hi Dana. I would simply say that the person you are quoting said, then write
out what they said without quotation marks. In this way it is clear that you
are producing what you thought they related without pretending it is a word
for word quote. If the words are so beautiful or dramatic or important to be
attributed exactly, you always have the option of contacting them and
reading the quotation for accuracy. In most cases a close paraphrase will
do, and if you decide you really need the quotations, often people will tell
you that is exactly what they said if you make it sound good.
