[Nfb-editors] Question for all newsletter editors

Dear Judy:

We do have a print edition of the Blind Missourian, and we keep printing it because, as you say, a number of folks simply will not get it if we only use NFB-newsline. We are relying more and more on email, but I suspect that we are still spending about $300 an issue for the newsletter.

We use Microsoft Excel to handle the database that generates our labels. I think we then imported into some kind of label program that is capable of reading comma delimited files. We used to have a nifty little program that ran under DOS called PCFILE, but in its later incarnations it was not screen reader friendly. I can't say that we always find the mail merge program of Microsoft Office friendly either.

The one thing I can say about the print mailing that we do to reduced cost is use bulk mail and sort by ZIP Code. I think we have also used FREE MATTER FOR THE BLIND as well.

Warmly,

Gary

Subject: [Nfb-editors] Question for all newsletter editors

Hi all,
This is Judy Rasmussen, from Maryland. I am the editor of our affiliate newsletter, the Spectator. Our affiliate is trying to find ways to cut down
our printing costs. I am writing to inquire how your affiliate sends out
newsletters, i.e., large print, e-mail only, braille, or some other means?
The newsletter is on Newsline, but obviously this will not reach professionals in the field, sighted donors, etc. If you send your newsletter via e-mail only, how do you maintain your mailing list? Do you use a particular database? We will be discussing this issue at our all day board meeting on February 1, so any responses I receive before that date would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
