Hello Virgil,
It was a pleasure to meet you and all the other NFB members last night.
Thank you for allowing me to share about the 'Seeing through the Heart'
project.
Below is more information on the project and what I am asking. I appreciate
your help in spreading the news. I look forward to working with you in the
future. I have also copied and pasted the information in this email to a
word document that is attached. Wasn't sure which form was best.
Feel free to contact me. Aloha,
Naomi Olson

SEEING THROUGH THE HEART: PORTRAITS OF THE BLIND IN HAWAII (or PARADISE)
" When the lights go out, there is a light by which the heart sees." - Olga
Rosmanith
Seeing through the heart will be a black and white photo exhibit (and
possibly a book). Currently it is scheduled for showing at Art at Mark's
Garage in Chinatown, sometime in the first few months of 2011. The goal is
to raise awareness of the blind, and the different ways people see, by
sharing a photographic portrait of how each blind individual sees and their
connection to Hawaii. Seeing does not require sight through the eyes, and
possibly people with functioning eyes are not truly seeing to their fullest
capacity. We can learn from the blind, a new way to see and ways to activate
new parts of ourselves.
It is my desire to also share a few lines or paragraph from the subject
along with the photograph. These will help support the image and also can be
written in braille for another way to experience the photograph.
Exhibiting in black and white is purposeful so the viewer is not identified
with any color, they are forced in a way to focus more deeply as only values
of light appear. This also sets the images away from the daily stream of
highly saturated imagery we are subjected to daily, through publications, TV
and advertising. Hopefully the viewer will have a much more direct
experience and deepen the connection to the person in the portrait.
My goal is to photograph 40 to 50 different subjects (sometimes in twos,
threes, even a group). The exhibit will only show an estimated 30-35 images.
I am happy to shoot more. Please also know that not everyone photographed
will be in the final exhibit (or book) and there is never anything personal
about it. It would be best to have all the photographs taken by the end of
October 2010 as editing, processing, printing and framing will take a few
months to complete and the Holidays also.
Please call me or email me if you would like to participate or have
questions. Thank you and aloha!
