Hi Everyone,
Thank you very much for your kokua with SB 893. You are all champions!
Our voices were heard by Senator Baker. Many of us including Virgil, Finia,
Charlene, Ann, Milton, Rona, Kazmir, Kyle, Brandon, Brenda, Guywood,
Stan,Ellen and her friend and myself showed up at Senator Baker's office
Monday morning and we sure made a statement and impression. The NFB of
Hawaii voices were heard. Forgive me if I forgot anybody.
Since our meeting with Senator Baker I have been working intensely with
Senator Baker's legislative assistant. Senator Baker is working to hear SB
893 and the bill was so broad that she did not want to have any puka
(holes/gaps) She is a perfectionist and wants all questions answered before
any hearings. That is for our benefit. I beleve now that their is clarity
Senator Baker is truly working with us. We are working at the 11th hour and
their is a strong possibility SB 893 will be heard Thursday. In order for SB
893 to be heard Thursday Senator Baker will need to ask the Senate for a
waiver. I will know tomorrow around 12 noon whether the bill will be heard.
I will notify you one way or the other. Testimonys will need to be sent and
more importantly we need to be there in person at the hearing. Honestly, it
has been a roller coaster these few days. Need you to keep up the spirits
and positive attitude. One step at a time.
Best Regards, Nani Fife

Aloha Senator Baker,

We the members of the blind community and friends ask you to please give

SB893 a chance to be heard. All we are asking is for the opportunity for

our voices to be heard regarding how important this service is to our lives.

Being one of the smallest percentage of the disabled population, we want

equal access to the same print material that you and everyone else take for

granted.

Why are you denying us a chance to share with you and your committee on why

we feel that this bill is important to us and all of those who are print

disabled?

If you look at what group has the highest percentage of being unemployed.

You will find out that of the employable blind people. There are only

about 30 percent of us who are employed and 70 percent who are not.

Although in Hawaii those of us who are employed are often earning wages

equal to our counterparts at approximately $20 per hour.

You might wonder why is that? The truth in a nut shell is that Blindness

is considered to be one of the most frightening disabilities to anyone who

does not have it. The

misperception society has of the blind or those who are print disabled, is

that we can't do anything because

we are blind. What we say is. With the right attitude, training and tools,

then there is almost anything we can do. You are probably wondering

what is my point? The point is by not allowing this bill to be scheduled

you are also saying that we don't need to have access to the paper, TV guide

magazines, job listings and many other services that Newsline provides. Not

just that but, we don't need to work. Let the system be burdened further by

having us depend on the social welfare system.

Mahalo and Aloha,

Virgil Stinnett,

VP NFB of Hawaii

    Aloha Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland,

We are requesting your continued assistance in having SB893 heard. As you

know this bill is essential to the print disabled having access to material

and information that every other Hawaiian citizen has a right to!

As voting members of our community, We want an opportunity to testify and

make our voices heard.!

In 2003 the 22nd Legislation did pass a PUC-Newsline bill SB1647. That year

the governor vetoed many bills, our SB1647 was one included in the vetoes.

We greatly appreciate all you are doing for us.

Mahalo and Aloha,
