.

Now in its fifth year, the Holman Prize is an international competition for
people who are blind or legally blind to push themselves out of their
comfort zone and challenge perceptions of blindness worldwide. The prize is
named for James Holman
<https://lighthouse-sf.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f40e17a83bbae60b5969a0798&id=e16d972e24&e=7607b20106>,
a nineteenth century blind explorer, who was the most prolific private
traveler before the era of modern transportation. Each year the winners
receive up to $25,000 to carry out their adventure over the course of a
year.

It all starts with a 90-second YouTube pitch where each applicant explains
what they would do if they win the Holman Prize. Ideas range from improving
accessibility, to providing educational opportunities, to increasing roles
for blind people in the Creative Arts and more.

This year’s semifinalists hail from 17 countries on five continents and
range in age from 18 to 61. They include a People’s Choice Semifinalist,
who is the person who received the most likes on their pitch video. Below
you will find each semifinalist’s name, age, country and Holman Prize idea.
Click on their name to watch their pitch videos. Or, watch the entire
YouTube playlist of the 2021 Holman Prize Semifinalists.

part and we urge you to apply again next year. It is the breadth and depth
