Fact Sheet

Supporting state legislative funding for public transportation in Idaho

The National Federation of the Blind knows that a viable public
transportation system reduces traffic congestion, reduces wear and tear on
roads and bridges, and allows all Idahoans to participate fully, and
increase their economic contribution in their cities and communities. The
recently passed Fix America's Surface Transportation (FAST) act provides
both formula funding, and a competitive grant program to address bus and bus
facility needs. It will increase dedicated bus funding to 89% over the five
year life of the bill. It will establish a pilot program for communities to
expand transit through the use of public/private partnerships. It provides
for the coordination of transportation services with other federally
assisted transportation services to aid in the mobility of seniors and
people with disabilities.

These provisions are a positive step forward, but do not provide all the
answers. Idaho is one of only two states with no dedicated funding for
public transportation. Dedicated funding for public transportation needs to
be enacted.

The National Federation of the Blind of Idaho knows that people will use a
solid, well run transportation system, as examples exist in Idaho. We urge
your support for public transportation.
