Terry Leon Harris
May 25, 1948 - May 14, 2016
Terry Leon Harris, 67, resident of Boise, Idaho, passed on May 14, 2016, from complications with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Terry was born May 25, 1948 to Betty and Delbert Harris (Zebe) in Pocatello, Idaho. He had one brother Lawrence Scott Harris (Charlie). In the early 1950's, Terry and Charlie were adopted by Nellie Russell-Harris, Zebe's second wife. Nellie (Mom) was the best mother any child could want.
Early in life Terry enjoyed wrestling, football, rodeo, hunting, and fishing. Terry continued to hunt and fish throughout his life. Terry's favorite hunting partners included Clell and Laura Bennett and Dwight Romriell. Terry moved to Boise in 1974 and continued his outdoor adventures. His wife Kathy, and her parents, Dick and Georgianna Parker set off on many great hunting and fishing escapades. On a recent trip to Alaska, Terry tried to "arrange" for his wife to have lunch with a bear (not be lunch), but he just couldn't get a herring in her pocket! Terry's has always been known for his lighthearted and fun spirit.
Though Terry lost his sight in 1973, he was determined to be a "competent blind guy." With the support and encouragement of the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Terry was able to obtain two college degrees and begin a self-employed career. Terry was not only the owner, but he also operated his businesses which included the Julia Davis Boat House, Terry's Cafeteria (at the Industrial Commission), and Terry's Vending, which serviced multiple government agencies. Terry retired in March 2016.
Terry's competence was evident in his personal life as well. How many blind guys have you seen water ski, climb trees, sweep chimneys, run a bandsaw, or pack out an Elk? His advice to others is "don't cut yourself short and always have a positive attitude." Though he has proven his ability, Terry owes his success, both professionally and personally to "the best lady that ever happened in his life," his wife, Kathy. Terry met Kathy J. Parker in 1984, and they married on February 14, 1991.
Terry was preceded in death by his birth- mother, Betty Jean Cook; father, Delbert Leon Harris; step-father, Homer Cutler; adopted-mother, Nellie Cutler and his eldest son, Michael Leon Harris. He is survived by his wife, Kathy J. Harris; daughter Misty Jo (and John) Guantonio of Carson City, Nevada; and son, Mark Eugene Harris of Boise Idaho. Terry's surviving grandchildren are Kristopher (Krissy) Jo Harris, Michael Leon Harris Jr., Elizabeth Katherine Harris, Marissa Whitney Harris, Noah Eugene Harris, Marius Zyler Harris, and Tytaniun Leon Harris. Other survivors include Terry's brother, Lawrence Scott Harris; uncle, John E. Donnelly; and aunt, Joann Florio.
Services will be held at 4 pm May 18, 2016, at Bowman Funeral Directors, 10254 W. Carlton Bay, Garden City, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org) or the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (vocational rehabilitation program), 341 W. Washington St. Boise, Idaho 83702
