Are there issues if you don't have a smart phone?

Dana,

The initial setup process for the Echo is a little cumbersome. You will
need an amazon account as well as to be logged into the Amazon Alexa app
from a smartphone or computer.

If you would like to set it up via the computer, you can go to:

http://echo.amazon.com

You may sign in with your amazon account, and it will walk you through
the process.

The process does involve disconnecting from your home wireless network
and connecting to the Amazon Echo's wireless network. From there, it
will give you instructions on connecting the echo to your house network.

Once setup is complete, you never need to use the Amazon Alexa app again
if you do not want to.

Certain skills from the Alexa Skills list will ask you to log into a
service (NFB News Line for example), but this can be accomplished
through the Alexa app on a smartphone.

The echo doesn't care who's Amazon account it is logged into. So, if
Mike is able to assist you with the technological part of the setup
(logging into amazon and getting connected to wireless), it will do it's
job just fine, and become much easier to use.

I use my echo and echo dot on a daily basus. If you are interested in
getting it set up and would like help, I would be more than happy to do
what is necessary to get you guys up and going.

I understand the setup process sounds a little overwhelming, however, it
is farely straight forward. Without complications, it should take about
five minutes. After the setup process, the Alexa app will be needed for
a couple of small tasks.

As stated previously, logging into external skills (NFB Newsline, for
example) will need to be done through the Alexa app.

There are various settings that may be changed (having Alexa make a
sound when she activates and deactivates, setting up news sources in
your flash briefing, and a few other features that you may or may not use.

Once you do get it set up and configured the way you would like it,
however, you can do everything by simply talking to it:

Alexa, what is the wather?

Alexa, set a cooking timer for 15 minutes.

Alexa, Play the beatles.

If you are interested in getting the echo and need assistance, I'm
willing to provide!

Regards,

Tj
