[NFB-Idaho] invading a blind person's personal space

Since I first began to travel with a long white cane in the 1960's, I have noticed a marked imprurement in attitudes of other pedestrians and drivers. It has been very gradual and often spotty. There was a time when I could hardly go anywhere without being stopped. I was not asked if I needed help, but told what I wanted to do. I think there has been a very gradual improvement in the understanding that blind people, and other disabled people as well, can think and speak for themves. Now it is very seldom that a driver stops to insist on "helping". Partly this probably has to do with more crowded streets, but public education is making a difference. And the fact that there are a lot more people out traveling independently also makes a difference. And we have been talking to kids in schools for a couple of generations. These kids have grown up with a slightly different orientation to blindness. I think we are seeing a cumulative effect.
