Subject: [NFB-Idaho] RAINN training required of all NFB Affiliate Officers: Alittle bit of information about how NFB is enlisting us to address issues ofinappropriate personal conduct
Hi Everyone,
Recently, the NFB issued a directive requiring all Officers of
Affiliates to complete training delivered by RAINN. Based in Washington,
DC, RAINN is the largest training and advocacy group against sexual
abuse in the U.S. RAINN stands for "Rape, Abuse, & Incest National
Network." RAINN also works to fight abusive behavior toward any
individual regardless of their personal identity or other
characteristics. It operates a National Sexual Assault Hotline, and
offers training and support to prevent sexual violence, help victims and
ensure that rapists are brought to justice. You can visit their website
at https://www.rainn.org
I attended "training session #6" delivered to NFB Officers. The session
was 3-1/2 hours online on Saturday, 10 April. There were over 50 others
attending as well. The principal reason NFB is requiring its officers
and others to complete this training is traceable to events perpetrated
by a contractor to NFB at one of its national centers. NFB wants its
membership to be knowledgeable of and sensitive to these phenomena and
have the will and ability to respond, protect, and support individuals
who have experienced harassment and abusive behavior.
The principal objectives of the training were the following:
* Identify harassing and abusive behavior
* Identify how harassers and others attempt to conceal the abusive
behavior and attempt to blame the victims
* Know principal methods for supporting victims in coping and
reporting
* Know who to call on to provide trained support for the victims.
One of the principal media used in the training was a disarmingly simple
recording that clarified what _consent_ is, and how it works. You can
replay that recording at the following URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGoWLWS4-kU&authuser=0
Beyond that, the details are too many to review in an E-mail and I
encourage all NFB members to visit the RAINN website
<https://www.rainn.org> and become familiar with the issues and their
advice on how to respond. RAINN also provided the following contact
details at the close of the session.
