The National Federation of the blind is all about education, empowerment
and advocacy. This week Krystal W. and Cindy B. write about how they were
able to be ambassadors for our state in advocating for the needs of the
blind.

First a message from our president, Dana Ard,

Our Idaho affiliate has a history of advocacy both for our state and for
our national concerns. Because of our advocacy work in 1967,the bill to
create the Idaho Commission for the Blind was passed in our Idaho
legislature. Legislators said it couldn’t be done, but NFB of Idaho members
were present in each legislative session until the bill was passed.
Similarly, because of our efforts, we got talking book services for Idahoans
in Idaho in 1973. We have had to fight to keep the ICBVI as a separate
agency several times. On the federal level, we worked with Senator Risch,
who was instrumental in the passage of the Marrakesh treaty, which is an
international publications treaty, providing more materials for the blind.

Hello, my name is Krystal White, and I have been fortunate to receive
funding from the NFB of Idaho for a couple great lifechanging experiences.
Just this past October my guide dog Gage and I got help from the NFB for our
airline ticket to San Francisco where we got to join A rally. This rally
was put together by the national NFB and other organizations to protest
against Uber and Lift for denial of rides for blind guide dog users. It
is illegal for any ride share company to deny guide dog users rides. There
were over 120 blind guide dog users from all over the United States chanting
and marching for the same rights that sighted riders have. The NFB has been
in mediation with Uber and Lift for many years and we wanted them to hear us
and see just a small percentage of the people that have been disenfranchised
by their companies. I have had my problems with Uber and Lift in the past
and it has not gotten any better. This rally taught me that when you believe
in something so great that there can be an overwhelming sense of emotions.
I have so much gratitude towards the NFB of Idaho for all of the support and
generosity they have giving me and my family over the last 16 years. This
family and community of blind people also taught me to have confidence in
myself while dealing with blindness. The NFB needs your support now with
your donations so they can continue helping people in their communities.
Thank you to all of those who have donated in the past, present, and will
continue in the future to this great organization.

Washington Seminar

“hello, my name is Cindy Barajas and I am a proud member of the national
Federation of The Blind of Idaho. in January of this year, I had the amazing
privilege of going to Washington DC for the 2024 Washington seminar. This
was such an incredible experience for me because I have gotten to learn
about all of the bills that the NFB is trying to pass to Congress. What
really surprise me was that you get to go into a meeting with the
congressman or with their assistance and try to let them know what kind of
bill we are wanting to pass and see if they can sponsor it. One thing that I
learned from this whole experience is to live every single moment of it
because you never know when you will get the chance to do it again.”
