My Mom use to go to tag sales and purchase chairs and rocking chairs that
were caned and the caning was broken. She use to pay between $5 and $15 for
the chairs. She then stripped the varnish or paint off them. She would
revarnich or stain the chair and then cane it. They were beautiful when she got
done with them. She had a friend that always worked with her on it. Her
friend would tend to the reed in the bucket of water and feed the reed out to her
while she wove the reed. Her friend died going back about 5 years and she
tapered down and stopped caning.

She learned through a senior center that gave lessons doing it.
