[Nfb-krafters-korner] Perfection

Ah yes -- this sounds familiar -- I am not Navajo, but when I lived in
Arizona I took up coiled basket weaving, native american style. I studied
the various types of designs created by the various tribes, and indeed the
navajo baskets did have an intentional flaw woven into the design.
(Sometimes it was hard to find, but it was there.) I was in high school at
the time and thought this was crazy -- I was a perfectionist so had trouble
bringing myself to making that deliberate mistake, but in the end, when I
finished my basket, there were enough flaws in it that I didn't need to make
an intentional one!...*smile*
Happy quilting.

Odd you should mention God and perfection. The Navaho Mother godess was
represented by a spider and the women who wove the Navaho blankets were
taught so by Mother Spider. They would often go out in the desert and rub
their hands through unoccupied spider webbs to increase their talent when
weaving a blanket. They also believed that only the Mother Spider could
weave a perfect blanket, so in order not to upset her by thinking they could
ever do as well as she could, they made sure to weave some flaw into each
and every blanket, often as a whole in one corner.
