[Nfb-krafters-korner] Nfb-krafters-korner Digest, Vol 18, Issue 13

Rena Seay ras98r at yahoo.com

I have to agree with eveyone else it's a craft.  I've done a little novice cake decorating this Christmas.  For example, I turned a heart shaped cake into Santa's face complete with hat and beard.  I've done a few birthday cakes but the writting never turns out very ledgable or at the very least as nice as I want.  Before anyone gets excited I wouldn't know the first thing about teaching it.  I know when I was a child it was a categoriy in 4H, I think as a craft.  If we can find anyone to teach it I'd be interested but I'm not sure I have time.  I'm working on a second Master's degree (I've got to be certifiablly crazy by know) and working and all the rest of life's responsibilities.

Lets see crafty things I got for Christmas,  case to hold all my knitting needles, think my roomate did that in self defence (got tired of finding them in strange places when they'ed escape their sack.  I also, recieved some lovely scrapbook paper, specifically for Brazil, where I traveled on mission work last summer.  Didn't give any homemade gifts this year as I broke my elbow in Brazil and couldn't work on any for about 5 months.  Mayber more next year.
Blessings
Rena

Hi everyone,

This is off topic, but I really need some help.

I in the past have used Anytime Deluxe for my organizer program.
Appointments, calendars, phone and address book, etc. I now purchased the new
version
and downloaded it yesterday that is suppose to work with vistta. It does not
work with JAWS!

The older version was perfect and very easy to use. This new one does not
say the date, appointments, etc. If I use the JAWS curser I can get some of
this info, but not much. I use to be able to tab from day to day or week to
week and nothing now.

I have tried using the Windows calendar that came on my computer, but that
does not work well either. At least this one will tab a little and tell me
what today is, but I can't navagate much more.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what works with vista and JAWS? Help
please! I was waiting to schedule classes when I got this computer up and
running and now that JAWS works I am still stuck in the mud here or frozen in
the
ice since it is so cold here.

Hi Joyce,
This is a very simple word document which has all of the dates for the
year. So you just fill it in as you please. Totally unsophisticated but
simple. Cost is about $3.50 US.

I say it's only a craft if you don't eat the ingredients before you
finish
and display it...*smile*
In short, you can't decorate your cake and eat it too...:d

This is an introduction to another popular off-loom beading technique called
netting. The stitch has a lacy appearance as groups of beads are connected
together forming a mesh with open spaces between the rows. There are many forms
of bead netting and can be used to create embellishments to a necklace or
collar, woven and worn as clothing or simply enclosing beads around a center
piece such as a crystal , or undrilled# cabochons made into a pendent for a
necklace It is a versatile stitch that can be created into different shapes such
as leaves, diamonds and snowflakes. remember, there are no 2 snowflakes created
alike in nature so happy beading.

Here is what you will need for the snowflake ornaments.

1. At least 5 grams or 1 tube of size 6 or smaller seed beads. in a color that
looks like a snowflake such as white, cream, clear, silver or even gold or some
folks have used Christmas colors like red and green.

2. One small spool beading thread in a matching or nutural color. There are
many brands of thread speciffically for beading Bead thread is designed to be
stronger than threads used for sewing, etc. It is also woven tighter. when
working with seed beads, you must have a durable thread that can handle being
passed through the beads multiple times. Please note, your thread color choice
should make it so that the thread cannot be seen through the beads. Here are
some ideas. Power Pro or Fireline braided fishing lines in a 10 pound test or
similar. A good nutral color choice would be the clear.

Nymo brand beading thread, size D or heavier in white for light color beads or
black for beads for a darker color. If you choose the Nymo brand it is a good
idea to also buy a thread conditioner to minimize fraying or tangling. A good
thread conditioner sold at most bead stores is a product called Thread Heaven.
You can also use beaswax but I do not recommend a paraphyn wax as it can rub off
on the beads and give the piece a dulled appearance.

3One Big Eye beading needle in any length. There are 2 types to choose from

4. One small sized ornament hook or make your own with a piece of heavy guage
wire.

For me, it becomes a craft because it involves the decorating aspect.

Technically, you could apply that to the presentation of a meal but I think
it takes more skill and aesthetic.

Okay, I can justify it any way you like but I want someone to teach it to
blind people. I believe that was one of my first questions for this list. I
am looking for more skill than simply being able to spread some icing and
have it cover the entire cake--like ridges on the edges, fluting, how to
write without touching the cake, leaves, hearts and any other kind of
element.

If it's creative, then it's a craft.

I'll add one more stipulation: It is a craft if I get a slice when you cut
it...*smile*
But more seriously, I agree there must be a creative element -- for example,
last Halloween a group of young people from church brought us some decorated
cookies -- the consisted of an orange color pumpkin cookie with orange
frosting with a chocolate kiss stuck in it so it looked just like the wicked
witch of the west after she melted -- the kiss forming the hat. I found
that quite funny and rather creative. It was fun eating all those
witches...*smile*

For me, it becomes a craft because it involves the decorating aspect.

Technically, you could apply that to the presentation of a meal but I think
it takes more skill and aesthetic.

Okay, I can justify it any way you like but I want someone to teach it to
blind people. I believe that was one of my first questions for this list. I
am looking for more skill than simply being able to spread some icing and
have it cover the entire cake--like ridges on the edges, fluting, how to
write without touching the cake, leaves, hearts and any other kind of
element.

snowflakeornament class

This is an introduction to another popular off-loom beading technique called
netting. The stitch has a lacy appearance as groups of beads are connected
together forming a mesh with open spaces between the rows. There are many
forms of bead netting and can be used to create embellishments to a necklace
or collar, woven and worn as clothing or simply enclosing beads around a
center piece such as a crystal , or undrilled# cabochons made into a pendent
for a necklace It is a versatile stitch that can be created into different
shapes such as leaves, diamonds and snowflakes. remember, there are no 2
snowflakes created alike in nature so happy beading.

Here is what you will need for the snowflake ornaments.

1. At least 5 grams or 1 tube of size 6 or smaller seed beads. in a color
that looks like a snowflake such as white, cream, clear, silver or even gold
or some folks have used Christmas colors like red and green.

2. One small spool beading thread in a matching or nutural color. There are
many brands of thread speciffically for beading Bead thread is designed to
be stronger than threads used for sewing, etc. It is also woven tighter.
when working with seed beads, you must have a durable thread that can handle
being passed through the beads multiple times. Please note, your thread
color choice should make it so that the thread cannot be seen through the
beads. Here are some ideas. Power Pro or Fireline braided fishing lines in
a 10 pound test or similar. A good nutral color choice would be the clear.

Nymo brand beading thread, size D or heavier in white for light color beads
or black for beads for a darker color. If you choose the Nymo brand it is a
good idea to also buy a thread conditioner to minimize fraying or tangling.
A good thread conditioner sold at most bead stores is a product called
Thread Heaven. You can also use beaswax but I do not recommend a paraphyn
wax as it can rub off on the beads and give the piece a dulled appearance.

3One Big Eye beading needle in any length. There are 2 types to choose from

4. One small sized ornament hook or make your own with a piece of heavy
guage wire.

So, come join us on January 26 2009 at 7pm Central. The number is 610 404
9100 and the code is 27238#.

This is a mistory to me. How can a blind person decorate a cake with
out the use of tutch? Of course you would not want to tutch the cake.
I have some sight, but know it is not enough to do this craft. I think
of a craft for the blind as something the blind can do by using their
sence of tutch and very limited, if no sight at all. With my craft, I
only use my sight to identify the colors of my yarn and I am sure I will
not be able to do that for the rest of my life.
While I have found a minute to write in this busy time at work, I did
not get any items craft related for Christmas.
I only have 2 projects that never got finished. Long ago, I could buy
precut cubic plastic canvis letters. I can not find them any where any
more. I bought the letters to spell; Merry Christmas. I started making
magnetic letters to put on the frunt door, saying Merry Christmas, in I
think it was red and edged in green.
The other project was a blanket, on circular needles, made of multi red,
white and blue yarn. It is knit a row and perl a row. I did not get
far. That is when I got into doing the NFB, Whozit projects in plastic
canvis.
As far as clutter, I had my closit redone this summer. I put alfa
shelving in. One side of my closet is almost just for my craft items.
At the container store I bought these containers, they look like a clear
picnic baskit, with handles. They even have the gruves like a basket,
on the sides. I put all my Christmas yarn in one, my baby yarn in one,
my multi in one and the others hold the rest. The main reason I like
these is that they alow the yarn to stand up and you can see all your
colors at once.
I use a smaller size for canvis shapes and also ziplock shoe boxes for
canvis shapes. I keep 2 or 3 in my bedroom with colors of what I am
currently working on. They can fit in a bottom shelf of a bookshelf for
easy access and they come in 2 or 3 sizes.
Now I have to work on organizining my bookcases and files.
Welcome to 2009!

Terry Powers

There are people/bakeries that make cakes that are actual sculptures. Often
these cakes are for very special occasions like weddings or significant
birthdays, etc. The cakes are priced from around $1,500 & upwards. The
cakes can be made to look like a designer handbag, skeins of yarn with
knitting needles, I suppose whatever is significant for the occasion or
person for whom the cake is intended.

Like others said, if its a matter of simply smearing icing on the cake, very
simple, then I would not call that a craft or art even though the cake might
taste really good. There are those people who take their cooking seriously
and call it an art, but for me while there is a skill set required, its
cooking, and not a craft. The cake decorating, however, is very specialized
and I think the skills used in doing it can be applied to other crafty
things.

Hi Laurie:

Is this a new class, or a part 2-follow-up to the earring class you did
before Christmas? I'm interested in possibly trying, but do think I'm
hopeless when it comes to hand weaving the seed beads! The idea of working
the seeds around a focal bead is appealing to me. Let me know if it is
still open. If I have appropriate supplies I might give it a try again.

Thanks.
