[Nfb-krafters-korner] Amulet bead pattern

You might try making a mark at each row or counting the number of rows in
the pattern, getting something like pennies, buttons or other objects and
move them into a place once that row has been completed. You can also do
the same thing by making a mark on a piece of paper each time you complete
the row.

Subject: [Nfb-krafters-korner] Amulet bead pattern

Hello;

I am just learning to do bead work. I have learned how
to do the even count tubular peyote.
I have low vision and am having trouble following the
amulet bead pattern. Does anyone know how I can
keep track of what row I am on so I can get the design
to come out right? I try to count the number of the color
of beads that make the design but I get confused on what
row I am on.
Would like any help I can get on this problem.
Thank you;
Shirley in Texas

So I want to hear has anyone else made the Rosary beads? How did the
snowflake beading class turn out?

Did everyone think the one class for the snowflake was enough? I don't
know
how long the class lasted, but it seemed that there was still a long way
to
go when I had to leave at 9 p.m.

I know we have not listed any upcoming classes, but there is more to come
in
the near future. I will have a couple of announcements to make in the next

I have not done a "Friday Question" recently since I was having so
many
computer problems. I also lost the questions that Eileen and others had
sent
to
me when my computer died.

So please do put your thinking caps on and send me some questions.
Remember
you have to send them to me:

and don't send them to the list.

Really, its hats off to Sidney because I never would have come up with the

Hope it was okay to post the pictures even though some can't see them. I

Hi Joyce and All,
I finished my snowflake yesterday. It turned out right but my tnsion
on the beads was a bit tight and it wants to curl up. but I am
thrilled that I understand how and can work on more snowflakes. This
was made of odd colored beads so not a big deal.

Hi Joyce --
I thought the snowflake class was about the right length, although I had a
bit of trouble with my beads -- the stop bead slid off and all my beads fell
off so I had to start over when everyone else was working on their 3rd or
4th row -- but the pattern is simple enough to communicate in one class.
As for my snowflake, I have a question -- I had a lot of trouble keeping the
beads from loosening on the thread -- I had a mess of loose thread and beads
and it was hard to continually pulle the thread tight to get the pattern. In
fact, I have still not finished my snowflake. Laurie -- if you're reading
this mail, is there a trick to keeping the beads from sliding on the thread
while you are adding new beads? My snowflake is kind of a mess, although I
know I'm doing it right because when I pull the thread tight it looks good.

Another thing I noticed about the presentation was that some of us were
beading clockwise and some counterclockwise around the snowflake. Laurie
prepared the presentation to assume we were going clockwise. I was one who
had to flip things around and it changed the way I was working on the
snowflake. I tend to do needlework lefthanded, but can do it either way
depending on the way the instructor presents it. But some people might be
purely left handed. Just a thought.
Thanks.

                                 2008-09 Imagination Fund Campaign

One Million for Literacy

This year's NFB Imagination Fund campaign will continue to
build on our past success and will expand our effort to the largest
campaign yet. During this campaign cycle our focus is on continuing
to give our Imaginators a variety of tools to solicit contributions
and promote the ongoing work of the Federation. Additionally, we
want to leverage our Imagination Fund work as an opportunity to
promote the NFB's leadership in Braille literacy. The NFB has
launched the largest campaign for Braille literacy ever undertaken,
and the NFB Imagination Fund is an important way for you to encourage
friends, family, business associates, and members of the public to
contribute to new opportunities by giving to the Imagination Fund.

Some members have asked about the distinction between our work
in the Imagination Fund and our work in 2009 around the Braille
literacy campaign. Think of it in this way:

- Imagination Fund: Widening our circle of support by encouraging
those outside the Federation to support the important work we are
doing by giving financial contributions.

- Braille literacy campaign: Creating widespread public awareness
about Braille, encouraging people to purchase the U.S. Louis Braille
Commemorative Silver Dollar, and building awareness of the leadership
of the Federation.

In other words, in terms of fundraising we want NFB members to
focus on securing support for the Imagination Fund. And, of course,
the dollars contributed to the NFB Imagination Fund will support our
Braille literacy effort by building:

- the initiatives of the NFB Jernigan Institute, including innovative
research, education, and technology development related to Braille literacy;
- Braille outreach programs developed by NFB affiliates to address
specific Braille literacy concerns in local communities;
- leadership and support in local chapters to provide mentoring to
newly blind individuals and families with blind children; and
- previously unimagined programs to change what it means to be blind.

Yes, you are right, the NFB does need to provide matching
funds in order to secure funds generated from the sale of the Louis
Braille coin. However, we are making specific outreach efforts to
corporations, foundations, and other large donors to secure those
funds. This is largely being managed by the national office and the
Braille literacy team headed by Fred Schroeder. If you know of
funding sources that you can secure to support the Braille literacy
initiative, you should contact Dr. Schroeder so he can work with you
to follow up. Otherwise, NFB members should focus their individual
fundraising efforts on the Imagination Fund culminating in our Motor
City March for Independence in Detroit.

The pending release of the U.S. Louis Braille commemorative
coin, and our public outreach around Braille literacy provides a
perfect vehicle to talk to members of the public about Braille
literacy and encourage them to support us. Thus, NFB members should
continue to see the NFB Imagination Fund as our primary way to bring
new dollars of support to our movement. This year we will raise one
million dollars and at the same time we will forever change Braille
literacy in this country.

Valerie,

Circular needles are really easy. I am actually using them for flat work
because they help keep the weight of the project off the actual needles when
you work on large items.

I have never noticed a difference in stitches twisting verses using straight
needles. Circulars can also be used as stitch holders and life lines. There
is even a technique for using to circulars for socks instead of using double
pointed needles.

I love circular needles, even though I have used them very little. Val,
very interest in getting my hands on some animal or toy paterns. Can
receive in braille or e-mail

I need some training on how to make shapes. Eager to try something
small. The snake for a boy or a simple teddy for a girl.

Thanks.

Valerie,

Circular needles are really easy. I am actually using them for flat work
because they help keep the weight of the project off the actual needles
when you work on large items.

I have never noticed a difference in stitches twisting verses using
straight needles. Circulars can also be used as stitch holders and life
lines. There is even a technique for using to circulars for socks
instead of using double pointed needles.
