Joyce & All:
Both Louis & I back up about once per month. It should probably be done in
our case once a week or every other week. The frequency depends on how
vital you rate the information you keep/change/add onto your computer and
the volume of the info you're dealing with. This is a personal choice. We
used to start the back ups running at bed time and would let it run over
night. With newer back up systems it does not take as long. Maybe you
could run it during dinner when you will not be using the computer. Since
your backup is new & external, I'd expect it might take approx 1 hour to
run, This to depends on the size of your hard drive and how much your
backing up.
IMO More importantly for everyone is the anti virus & spyware software's.
These should be set to update definitions on a daily basis for both updating
& scanning for infections. To ignore either of these is not only
detrimental to one's self but inconsiderate to those people with whom any
type of correspondence, frequent or infrequent, occurs since the infections
can spread & possibly do damage to their computers. Its easy to set options
within your antivirus/spyware program to automatically update definitions &
perform scans on a daily basis.
I leave my computer turned on from the point I wake up to the time I go to
bed, so there are plenty of time slots to choose during the day to allow
both of these operations to take place without impacting my working on the
machine.
