One other thought that might be a little different if you know how to knit in the round.  I've seen hair scrungies made like this ...

Cast on 30-inches worth of sts on a circular needle.  place your round ring holder on the circular needle so it will lay on top of the stitches and it can slide up and down the length of the circular ndl.

Now join and knit 6-7 rows in the round.  because its stockinette st, and only 7 rows the fabric will curl up on itself and your circle will be firmly closed.  Then bind off all the sts, pull out the needle and the key ring will be securly, & forever set on the make-shift tube.
