[Nfb-krafters-korner] rag rugs

Does everyone know how to make strips for these types of rugs quick and fast? I was shown this method when I took my toothbrush rug class and it made making strips of fabric so easy and simple. What you do is you take your sheet/fabric and cut the beginning of your strips. Say you were cutting 1" strips. Go across the top of your fabric and make a cut every inch. Cut down about 3" of the strip. This works best with help from another person, but you can do it by yourself. Each person grab ahold of every other top of the strips. One person pulls one way, while the other person pulls the other way. The strips will tear in straight strips fast and quick! If you are doing it by yourself, do the same idea, but in your right hand get ahold of every other strip and do the same with the remaining and your left hand. PULL...When two people are doing it, you can walk away from each other and it seems easier, plus you don't have to have as much strength as when you are doing it alone.

This method sure saves a lot of time cutting strips. If I can clarify anything, let me know.

Hi Carolyn annd Joyce, The type of rag rugs I make are made from new
fabric, not old rags. I purchase the fabric from a place called Great
Northern weaving. They are here in michigan but also have a web site. It
is the end of the fabricc that is used for making things like sheets. It is
in a roll that very in with from an inch to a foot or more. Three inches is
about the widest strip you would want to use for crocheted rugs. So if you
buy the wider pieces you would have to cut it. My husband has been working
on a easier way to cut it but he hasn't made it yet. On the site they say
the with so you would be wise to choose the thinner strips.

The first place I saw it was at Dolliewood. If you haven't heard of it, it
is a theme park in Tennessee owned by Dollie Partin. I am sure you could
get this type of fabric remnents at other places too.

You would need a size Q crochet hook. The rugs are made with single
crochet. The hardest part of making them is increasing evenly around the
rounded ends of the oval so the rug lays flat. At About.com you can find
instructions crocheting anything in an oval.

I have just given you the basic idea here. I would be happy to help you
more if you are interested. I think you should give it a try.
