It can happen that knitting needles get labeled with the wrong size printed 
on them.  The only sure way to know is to use a knitting needle gauge. 
Years ago I bought from a local yarn shop a pair of needles and they were 
stamped size 6.  Years later, when I finally invested in a needle gauge, I 
discovered they were size 7's.  It happens more often than you might care to 
think and doesn't matter if you are buying inexpensive needles or more 
expensive quality needles, doesn't matter if you buy from a big box store or 
a small local yarn shop ... it can happen at any of them brick & mortar or 
mail order same thing applies.  Always pays to check them on a knitting 
needle gauge.  If you feel that you're going to stick with knitting I 
strongly recommend you get a needle gauge.
