Terrence:

Joyce is correct, the tail should not pull out.  Did you leave a 4 to 6 inch 
tail?  It should not be any shorter than that because at the end of your 
knitting, the tail will get woven into your knitting with a tapestrty needle 
or even a crochet hook as some like to do.
