Hi teresa,

A favorite of mine is as follows:

Cast on 4-45 stitches in a cotton yarn on size 7 or 8 needles.
Knit 5 purl 5 for 5 rows then purl 5 knit 5 for the next 5 rows.  Keep
alternating until desired length.
Simple and easy.
