Were they textured?  I have an idea what ones you might mean.  They have a large hole, if you get large ones.  Neet idea.  

Also thanks for the idea of Hobby Lobby.  I forgot they even existed.

The ones we used to use were called propeller beads and we would use a red one, then white, then red etc.  They stacked nicely on one another.

Hi Terry,
When the kids were small we made candy canes from plastic beads.  They actually fit on a pipe cleaner and you could put white for the main part and red beads for the bottom.  I don't remember the name of these beads. But a craft store would know for sure.
