No, it's not that you knit too tight.  You are trying to make the M1 right on the cast on edge so that is what's making it tighter than it would be if you had one knit row before trying to do the M1.  In my humble opinion, I think the Kf&B is the better way to increase for this particular pattern. 
Or as Gail has mentioned you could split the double strand into the two individual strands and just knit each strand seperately for your increases until you have the number of stitches required.

Knitting double stranded is actually pretty easy ... just treat each double strand as 1 which is what knitting double stranded is.  Just makes a thicker strand and a thicker knitted fabric.
