That's exactly where the confusion happened.  Your 8 MM is our size
11.  When I asked the guy at Fred Meyer for size 8s, he looked at the
Metric size, not the American size.  So here I was in knitting class,
trying to knit on size 11s (American) while everyone else was knitting
on size 8s (American).
