[Nfb-krafters-korner] yarn question

Can anyone tell me what fingering weight yarn is.  I want to try crochet 
beading for the first time and I have found a pattern on Lion brand yarn, 
pattern no. 60044, but since this will be my first attempt I don't really 
want to purchase yarn if I can help it.How thin is fingering yarn? Is it 
like thread or string?
